Pool Remodeling vs. New Construction: What’s Right for You?

Pool Remodeling vs. New Construction: What's Right for You?

Your backyard pool has seen better days. The plaster is cracking, the tile looks outdated, and the equipment struggles to keep up. You’re facing a big decision: should you remodel your existing pool or start fresh with new construction?

Both options transform your outdoor space, but they serve different needs and budgets. Remodeling updates what you already have, while new construction gives you complete creative freedom. The right choice depends on your pool’s current condition, your long-term goals, and how you want to use your backyard.

This guide breaks down everything you need to know about pool remodeling versus new construction. You’ll learn when each option makes sense, what to expect during the process, and how to make the decision that fits your Las Vegas home best.

What Pool Remodeling Actually Means

Pool remodeling updates and improves your existing pool structure. You keep the same basic footprint and shell while replacing worn surfaces, upgrading equipment, and adding modern features. Think of it as giving your pool a complete makeover without tearing everything out.

Remodeling works best when your pool’s structure remains sound. The shell shouldn’t have major cracks or structural damage. The plumbing and electrical systems should be functional, even if they need updates. If the foundation is solid, remodeling can transform your pool for significantly less than building new.

Most remodeling projects focus on surfaces and finishes. New plaster, tile, and coping refresh the entire look. Updated equipment like variable-speed pumps and LED lighting improves efficiency. You can add features like beach entries or sun shelves within the existing footprint. The process typically takes three to six weeks from start to finish. Our team specializes in custom pool design that maximizes your existing pool’s potential.

Key Factors That Guide Your Decision

Every pool situation is unique. The right choice between remodeling and new construction depends on several critical factors. Understanding these elements helps you make a confident decision that serves your needs for years to come.

Current Pool Condition

Pool Remodeling vs. New Construction: What's Right for You?

Your existing pool’s structural integrity determines whether remodeling is even viable. Surface issues like faded plaster or outdated tile are perfect for remodeling. Deep structural cracks, failing equipment, or major plumbing problems often make new construction more practical and cost-effective long-term.

Budget and Timeline

Remodeling typically costs $10,000 to $35,000 for Las Vegas pools and takes four to eight weeks. New construction starts around $50,000 and runs three to five months. Your financial capacity and how quickly you want results heavily influence which path makes sense for your situation.

Design Goals and Lifestyle Needs

Remodeling works within your existing footprint and basic shape. You can’t easily change overall dimensions or dramatically alter depth. New construction removes all limitations and lets you design exactly what you want. If your vision requires fundamental changes to size, shape, or location, new construction is the answer.

Both options increase home value when done professionally. Modern pool automation systems integrate seamlessly with either approach, bringing smart technology and energy efficiency to your backyard regardless of which path you choose.

Cost Comparison and Value Analysis

Remodeling costs vary based on scope but typically deliver dramatic improvements for a manageable investment. Surface refinishing with new plaster and tile represents the lower end. Comprehensive remodels with equipment upgrades, new decking, and added features reach the higher range. You get a significant transformation without the expense of starting over.

New construction requires a larger upfront investment but delivers complete customization:

  • Modern materials and construction techniques throughout
  • Current code compliance and energy efficiency standards
  • Optimal placement for sun exposure and views
  • Integration with comprehensive outdoor living spaces
  • Latest technology built in from day one
  • Warranty coverage on all new systems and surfaces

Return on investment differs between options. Remodeling often provides better ROI because lower costs mean you need less value increase to break even. New construction adds more absolute value but requires a larger upfront commitment. Energy efficiency improvements with either option save money over time through reduced utility costs and lower maintenance needs. Professional outdoor living design enhances the entire space and maximizes your investment returns.

When Remodeling Makes the Most Sense

Remodeling is your best option when the pool’s bones are good, but the appearance needs work. Surface wear shows up first as faded plaster, outdated tile, or worn decking. These are all perfect candidates for remodeling without touching the underlying structure that still has years of life remaining.

Budget considerations often point toward remodeling. You can update your pool’s look and function for 40-60% less than new construction in many cases. The existing infrastructure stays in place, which saves substantial time and money. You get a refreshed pool without the expense of excavation and major structural work.

Your property layout might also favor remodeling. If your current pool fits perfectly in your backyard with good access, proper drainage, and ideal sun exposure, why start over? Remodeling preserves what works while upgrading what doesn’t. You avoid the disruption of major excavation and the permitting complexities that come with new construction projects.

When New Construction Becomes Necessary

New construction makes sense when your current pool has serious structural problems. Major cracks in the shell that keep returning indicate foundation issues. Failing plumbing systems throughout the pool signal the end of useful life. When repair estimates approach 70-80% of new construction costs, replacement becomes the smarter financial decision.

Your vision might require fundamental changes that remodeling simply cannot deliver. Want a larger pool for family gatherings and entertaining? Need different depths for diving, volleyball, or lap swimming? Prefer a different location in your yard for better views or sun exposure? New construction gives you exactly what you want without compromise or limitation.

Design freedom makes new construction worth the investment for many homeowners. You choose every detail from scratch—shape, size, depth, features, and finishes. Current trends like infinity edges, beach entries, and integrated spas are becoming easily achievable. The pool reflects your lifestyle perfectly because it’s designed specifically for how you’ll actually use it. Our extensive portfolio showcases stunning examples of both remodeled and newly constructed pools across Las Vegas.

Making the Right Choice for Your Situation

Start by honestly assessing your current pool’s condition. Can the structure support another 15-20 years of use? Are the problems purely cosmetic or do they indicate deeper issues? A professional inspection reveals whether remodeling is viable or if structural problems demand complete replacement for long-term success.

Consider how well your current pool meets your needs. Is the size right for your family and how you entertain? Does the depth work for how you actually use the space? If the pool’s dimensions and location are perfect, remodeling makes excellent sense. If you constantly wish it were different, new construction might justify the higher investment.

Edgewater Custom Pools is a fantastic company to work with when building your custom pool in the Clark County/Mesquite/Las Vegas area. I was highly impressed by their overall design, communication and support during all phases of the pool build and design process and their team is very knowledgeable. They were very attentive to my needs and the end result was amazing. I had them design/build a custom pool with full back yard landscaping, putting green and all final details. They knocked it out of the park and I highly recommend using them. They were there every day for two months and the process was very efficient. A+ all around and they stayed exactly on the projected budget/timeline. Great company!!

"We've been through a very frustrating ordeal trying to resolve a serious plumbing issue, and after being let down by a previous company in Las Vegas, we were ready to give up. Thankfully, a wonderful referral from Afuera Outdoor Living in Reno introduced us to Edgewater Custom Pools and Landscaping. From our first call, the service was exceptional. The Edgewater team was at our property the very same day, conducting a thorough inspection and demonstrating a genuine understanding of our problem. They went beyond just identifying the issue—they provided clear, effective solutions. Their attention to detail and care have completely turned our situation around. This experience has left us extremely impressed, and we wholeheartedly recommend both Afuera Outdoor Living in Reno and Edgewater Custom Pools and Landscaping in Las Vegas for any and all landscaping and irrigation projects."

The First of August we contacted Edgewater Pools after talking with 5 other Residence in our neighbor hood who used Edgewater. They (one of the owners) came out in less than a week and listened to what we wanted and 2 days later sent us a rendition of our pool in our backyard. It was everything both my wife and I asked for. It was a week later we gave Edgewater pools the go ahead to start. They made Permitting, HOA approval easy and submitted everything we needed. I was so impressed the Excavating crew who had tight quarters to work in. They were bilingual and made it easy to communicate. All Edgewater employees were amazing and cared about our pool. The superintendent was very helpful keeping me in the loop for what happens next. Our pool started excavation on August 12th and 6 weeks later we filled the pool. Hands off the the Owners of Edgewater as they stopped in and made sure quality was at the top. We were pleased with all of the Sub Contractors. I would Recommend Edgewater Pools to anyone, you won’t be disappointed. Dan and Mike Run a Great ship.

Edgewater built a great pool, patio, landscaping, fence, all on time as promised! The only downside was the salesman. The salesman would not supply a break down of the pricing. When I asked him for the breakdown or changes during the design phase he would get belligerent, therefore the design and equipment was not exactly what I wanted.

We had ideas for a pool in our small backyard. Asked Edgewater to provide a quote, and upon their visit, learned our idea would not work due to HOA and city restrictions. Edgewater proposed a different design that worked great and led to our beautiful new pool/spa/firepit! They were easy to work with/reliable and completed the project sooner than expected. We are very pleased with the final result and highly recommend Edgewater!
